Project: Courier Sans font
Client: Self-published / Lineto
Date: 2002 (Started in 1995)
Designer: James Goggin
In my first year of college I cut a hastily-customised version of default favourite Courier, sans slabs, to circumvent the ‘Courier only’ rule of a typography exercise. My tongue-in-cheek font-hacking actually resulted in a pleasantly anonymous and functional, even stylish, sans serif. I failed the exercise, but was able to refute accusations of rule-breaking with the answer ‘Ah, but you see: it's Courier SANS!’
After successful use of the font in my own designs as well as in the work of my friend Cornel Windlin, he received enough requests for me to consider a careful respace and redraw, resulting in ‘Courier Sans’ which was released commercially with Lineto in 2002.
